What we offer our graduates

Eligibility and specific conditions of employment

Employment with the AIHW is prescribed within the Public Service Act 1999. To be eligible for a role through

the AIHW Graduate Program, applicants must:

  • have successfully completed a bachelor’s degree or higher within the last five years or complete a

bachelor’s degree or higher prior to commencing the Graduate Program (no later than February 2024)

  • be an Australian citizen by the commencement of the Graduate Program in February 2024 (applicants

who have Permanent Residence status may be offered employment pending the granting of

citizenship)

  • consent to a national criminal history check
  • successfully complete a probationary period.

Who we are looking for

Our graduates will have the opportunity to contribute to various projects and work in areas such as

population health, community services, health services, housing, Indigenous health and welfare, information

management, and specialist technical and methodological support.

We are seeking graduates with demonstrated experience and knowledge in:

  • health or social sciences, policy or practices; or
  • statistical analysis and data science.

To be successful in our generalist roles, you will have well-developed skills in research design, data analysis

and integration, interpreting and manipulating statistics, reporting, and project management. You will also

have qualifications or relevant work experience in one or more social and health science disciplines,

including health economics, health information management, public health, epidemiology, humanities,

sociology, psychology, and computer science.

Due to the technical nature of our work, we also have some highly specialised roles which focus on statistical

analysis, data science and web content design and development. To be considered for these roles, you will

have well-developed subject matter knowledge in areas including statistical methodology, information

architecture, data linkage, machine learning, metadata, coding (SAS, Python, SPSS and/or STATA etc.),

classifications and terminologies, SNOMED-CT or XML data analytics, computer science, or programming.

You will also be able to manipulate and interrogate complex datasets using a range of software and be able

to assist with the preparation of reports and publications.

For these more specialised roles, we are looking for graduates with qualifications or relevant work

experience in statistics, demography, data science, mathematics, actuarial studies, accounting, data mining,

science journalism, predictive modelling, or geospatial/GIS (geographic information system) mapping.

Position Summary

As an AIHW Graduate you will contribute to the development of high-quality reports and other information

products that are used to help shape the policies and programs that lead Australia’s health, aged care,

wellbeing, support for families and minority groups, and diseases.

We are increasingly making use of data science with advanced analytics techniques such as predictive

modelling, machine learning, and data mining. We also have a strong focus on research and information

sharing and work in collaboration with international organisations such as the World Health Organisation

(WHO) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

You may have the opportunity to:

  • research and contribute to key projects and reports
  • assist in the collation, analysis, and reporting of health, housing, or community services statistics and

information

  • contribute to the development, documentation, and maintenance of data collections and standards
  • liaise with internal and external AIHW stakeholders through your involvement in writing reports and

papers, data collation, and analysis.

Selection Criteria

Our ideal candidate will have most or all of the following skills and knowledge:

1. Good verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate, and to prepare

clear and logical papers, presentations and reports using plain English.

2. Demonstrated numeracy and analytical skills, and experience in using software to process or present

data analysis.

3. Demonstrated organisational skills including the ability to prioritise one’s workload and escalate issues

when required.

4. Sound interpersonal skills, including the ability to work within timeframes, and contribute to, a team.
